Fire-Resistance and Sound Ratings for Wood Frame Assemblies
Building height, area, occupancy class, and number of stories will often determine the fire resistive construction requirements of building elements in light wood frame construction. This presentation introduces requirements for fire resistance and sound transmission in wood frame buildings of Types III and V construction.
One of the methods for determining fire resistance in the International Building Code (IBC) is fire-resistant designs documented in approved sources. The American Wood Council Design for Code Acceptance No. 3 Fire-Resistance-Rated Wood-Frame Wall and Floor/Ceiling Assemblies (DCA3), is commonly used as an approved source to specify fire-resistance-rated wood-frame assemblies. The DCA3 can also be used to demonstrate compliance with sound transmission requirements.

Join the Code Review and Development Committee and help review and develop building safety codes used to regulate building construction throughout the state. This is a great opportunity to meet other code officials in the region, learn about the code adoption process, how SVABO can propose future code changes at a state and regional level, and most importantly to discuss current code interpretations. We look forward to sharing your insight on this important code review process!
We hold monthly in person and/or on a virtual platform. For details on getting added to the invite list please contact:

February 2024 News Update:
- Our January meeting was a hybrid meeting held via Teams and at the County of Butte on January 19, 2024.
- Ongoing work includes:
- Monitoring and reporting of mid-cycle changes. We will be preparing a presentation for membership plus handouts as we get closer to these changes going into effect.
- Continuing to participate in LA Basin Code Committee meetings.
- Proposed revisions to 2027 IBC are in and being compiled. These will be published in latter part of February.

This review will need to be completed by the latter part of March in advance of the Group A Committee Action Hearings in April (meeting in Florida). LA Basin CAC will meet weekly through March.
- We understand CALBO bylaws have been amended to allow a similar committee code action committee, and LA Basin is interested in coordinating with CALBO to minimize duplication of efforts.
